4。95/5 - I can't even。 Not only is this manga so good, but the story just keeps getting better。 Immaculate。 The art style is so clean and beautiful。 The story has actual plot and substance, which we love for these two heartbroken cinnamon rolls。 I figured out that Zaria does something with his art style that I have a love/hate relationship with。 Most of the movement or action that happens is vaguely implied with sound as opposed to lines that show a direction。 I like this because that is a big p 4。95/5 - I can't even。 Not only is this manga so good, but the story just keeps getting better。 Immaculate。 The art style is so clean and beautiful。 The story has actual plot and substance, which we love for these two heartbroken cinnamon rolls。 I figured out that Zaria does something with his art style that I have a love/hate relationship with。 Most of the movement or action that happens is vaguely implied with sound as opposed to lines that show a direction。 I like this because that is a big part of what makes the art so clean。 I dislike it though because sometimes I'm then left thinking, "when did that happen?" BUT LOVE THE ART SO MUCH! Anyways, I digress。 The 。05 points I subtracted was because of my own indecision about the above。 Love this series。 Will now read everything else by this author/illustrator。 。。。more

I'm honestly in love with this story line。 I bought the first two on a whim the other day, not realizing that this series is by the same author who wrote another one of my favorite BL manga, "Liquor and Cigarettes"。 One of the things that I like the most about this series is that the characters have backstories to them。 It makes them more multi-dimensional。 Makes them more believable。 I also like that despite the NUMEROUS sexual situations Apollo has found himself in with Phi, he doesn't suddenl I'm honestly in love with this story line。 I bought the first two on a whim the other day, not realizing that this series is by the same author who wrote another one of my favorite BL manga, "Liquor and Cigarettes"。 One of the things that I like the most about this series is that the characters have backstories to them。 It makes them more multi-dimensional。 Makes them more believable。 I also like that despite the NUMEROUS sexual situations Apollo has found himself in with Phi, he doesn't suddenly have this "I've only ever been with women and attracted to women, but not this one hot dude is hitting on me or whatever and suddenly I think I may be gay even though the thought has NEVER before crossed my mind!" That trope is one I'm tired of seeing in BL manga and dramas so it's refreshing to see a character who clearly doesn't have a problem with the gay community and isn't homophobic, but also isn't just jumping into declaring himself gay。 Though this series does have its own faults and isn't perfect, I am really enjoying it and I can't wait to read more! 。。。more

CW: Sexual Abuse Trauma in past, Possible murder, Sex trafficking in pastThis volume was just as sensual and exciting as the first volume! We get a bit more development with our lead couple。 I love that everyone in this manga is so sex positive。 The brothel is so well handled, full of consent。 While it does have some dark themes, it's handled in a way that is tasteful。 The artist does an amazing job of drawing just enough to get the point across without going into too much detail。 This is a seri CW: Sexual Abuse Trauma in past, Possible murder, Sex trafficking in pastThis volume was just as sensual and exciting as the first volume! WHERE。 DO。 I。 GO。 FROM。 HERE?It's oozing with sexual tension, but here I am continuously turning pages。 And just when we finally get there, guess what—the volume ended!! You left me here all alone, cold, with a fricken cliffhanger in my mouth。 The author is harsh。 I have so many hopes for this volume, but well what do you know, the author wanted to take the longer path (and I guess, I don't want it to end either。) But yea, in hope for rendezvous business for the third volume。。。 I'm excited!! I wasn’t 100% sold on this series until this second volume, not really sure why。 But now I’m obsessed and can’t wait for the next installment。The illustrations are absolutely incredible。 Stopping to admire the details in some scenes is unavoidable - we frequently travel outside Shangri-La in this volume, and the juxtaposition between Shangri-La and the outside world becomes prevalent once we get further in。 One frame I was particularly taken with was on the last couple pages: Phi eats an apple w I wasn’t 100% sold on this series until this second volume, not really sure why。 But now I’m obsessed and can’t wait for the next installment。The illustrations are absolutely incredible。 Stopping to admire the details in some scenes is unavoidable - we frequently travel outside Shangri-La in this volume, and the juxtaposition between Shangri-La and the outside world becomes prevalent once we get further in。 One frame I was particularly taken with was on the last couple pages: Phi eats an apple while lounging in a chaise on the beach, a bowl of fruit placed very strategically on the table in front of him, tiki torches in the background。 Apollo compares Phi to a Greek painting and it’s all just。 So damn aesthetic。 I feel like readers will also experience the feelings of safety, comfort, pamperedness as the Birds do while we’re in Shangri-La。 Like a lush tropical vacation。 An amazing concept, beautifully done。 。。。more

Compared to Zariya's first volume, which introduced readers to Shangri-La and the promises and secrets it carries, Birds of Shangri-La's second chapter moves at a slower pace。 It expands on the leads and balances subplot introductions well to pique my interest for what's to come。 While Phi is still pushy in the scenes with him and Apollo, their power dynamic continues to be fascinating and sparks are definitely there。 I have a feeling the latter cares about the sex worker in a way he hasn't cons Compared to Zariya's first volume, which introduced readers to Shangri-La and the promises and secrets it carries, Birds of Shangri-La's second chapter moves at a slower pace。 It expands on the leads and balances subplot introductions well to pique my interest for what's to come。 While Phi is still pushy in the scenes with him and Apollo, their power dynamic continues to be fascinating and sparks are definitely there。 I have a feeling the latter cares about the sex worker in a way he hasn't considered yet, and the end of this volume will allow him to re-consider this knowledge。 。。。more

Phi is just too precious。 His dark past haunts him, but I'm glad Apollo is starting to realise Shangri-La is a real home to him。 I'm intrigued by the weird stalker and whether Hassan is still alive。 But also intrigued by the whole "let's keep this a secret" offer Phi made。 Just how many more secrets will they stack up, as the series continues? This series seriously needs more attention。 It's stunning。 With gorgeous art, a fully realized setting, dynamic characters, and the hints of tragedy, I'm captivated。 Zaru is a master at creating an atmosphere so real you can breathe it in。 The romance here is very slow burn, but so tender。 I don't know what the chances of a happy ending are, but I'm hooked。 I very much wish we got more than one volume a year。 This series seriously needs more attention。 It's stunning。 With gorgeous art, a fully realized setting, dynamic characters, and the hints of tragedy, I'm captivated。 Zaru is a master at creating an atmosphere so real you can breathe it in。 The romance here is very slow burn, but so tender。 I don't know what the chances of a happy ending are, but I'm hooked。 I very much wish we got more than one volume a year。 。。。more

Beautiful, gorgeous, amazing。 There's just something about this series that brings me so much joy。 It's so beautifully written and drawn。 I love it so much。 So many more elements came to play with Phi and Apollo finally telling each other about their pasts and the potential stalker coming into play。 Then there's just the shock Apollo had when he realized he'd broken the rules。 I'm really liking Klarna too。 He wasn't super relevant in the first volume, but he's becoming more involved now。 He's ki Beautiful, gorgeous, amazing。 There's just something about this series that brings me so much joy。 It's so beautifully written and drawn。 I love it so much。 So many more elements came to play with Phi and Apollo finally telling each other about their pasts and the potential stalker coming into play。 Then there's just the shock Apollo had when he realized he'd broken the rules。 I'm really liking Klarna too。 He wasn't super relevant in the first volume, but he's becoming more involved now。 He's kind of bratty and I love that。 Not sure when the third one will be out which absolutely hurts。 It seems like Ranmaru takes a little longer to put out content, but their works are so good it's definitely worth the wait。 。。。more

I can't get over the way Apollo takes care of Phi。。。 the way he LOOKS at him! He may not be gay but he is certainly falling for him and exactly how that love fully manifests is yet to be seen。 Apollo already constantly thinks and worries about him。。。Someone is stalking Phi and we don't know who it is。 It could be just random person who's seen him before or an old customer。 The scariest possibility is that it is someone from his past。 If it is, why are they making themselves known now? Boys’ love manga isn’t the genre we often turn to for interesting explorations of the human experience。That’s not to say manga, on the whole, can’t be a medium for good storytelling, it’s just that BL isn’t usually the genre we seek out for a Fine Literary Experience™ (nor does it have to be, like many fujoshi/fudanshi BL is my happy place)。 For me, standard BL fare can be broken down into one of a few categories: fluff (varying degrees of quality and enjoyment), fanservice (ditto), boys with fe Boys’ love manga isn’t the genre we often turn to for interesting explorations of the human experience。That’s not to say manga, on the whole, can’t be a medium for good storytelling, it’s just that BL isn’t usually the genre we seek out for a Fine Literary Experience™ (nor does it have to be, like many fujoshi/fudanshi BL is my happy place)。 For me, standard BL fare can be broken down into one of a few categories: fluff (varying degrees of quality and enjoyment), fanservice (ditto), boys with feelings/angst (double ditto)。 When BL rises above and becomes an especially interesting art or narrative experience, that’s when I get really excited。 I think of volume 1 of MADK, as well as Bad Boys, Happy Home or Our Dining Table as recently examples that rose above the fluff, fanservice or angst and offered something a little more。In my mind, Birds of Shangri-La volume 2 goes a little further in a really impressive way。We return to the island paradise and utopian all male brothel of Shangri-La, where the eccentric and loving owner caters to the whims of, and protects, his little birds, who nightly spread their plumage (among other things) for their loving, heavily vetted guests。Volume 1 focused more on introducing Shangri-La, as well as our leads。 There’s sad-eyed, beefy straight boy Apollo, hired by the owner as a “teaser”, an attendant who gets the birds nice and ruffled for the guests, as well as caring for them in other ways and even occasionally acting as bodyguards, as we learn in volume 2。 His heterosexuality is an added bonus, since the birds wanted a “naive straight boy” experience in a teaser。 Then there’s Phi, one of Shangri-La’s star attractions, a strikingly beautiful, mercurial prostitute with a tragic backstory (of course)。Read my full review on my BL blog: https://michaellyonswrites。wordpress。。。。 。。。more
